Description
Are you a new teacher or staff member working in a school or expanded learning program? Are you struggling with classroom management, conflict resolution, or generally keeping a positive environment in your classroom?
This “Positive Behavior Guidance” Book provides 52 easy strategies and activities to build your competence in keeping the peace, while you are on-the-job.
Designed to be used in school day, afterschool, and summer programs, the activities are most appropriate for grades K-8. Categories in this book include Starting off Right, creating a Caring Environment, Classroom Management, and Conflict Resolution.
Each activity includes Instructions, When to use the activity, Debrief questions to ask youth, and Extension activities.
Some examples of ideas from the book:
- Check with other staff in your program to make sure you are all enforcing rules and consequences in the same way so that youth know what is expected of them regardless of where in the program space they are.
- Each week, eat lunch with a handful of youth who struggled to behave over the past week.
- When assigning youth to work in groups on a project, give each group member a clearly defined responsibility (e.g. note taker, time-keeper, facilitator, illustrator). Before starting the project, review what each person is expected to do in that role.
At the end of the day, check-in with your colleagues or supervisors to share what activities you tried, and use the accompanying reflection page to answer and discuss: What worked? What didn’t work? What did you learn? What would you do differently next time?
